Preface Excerpt
Some people become experts in one subject and learn most of what there is to know about their specializations, while others become generalists and learn a little about many fields. We turn to experts when we need a specialized field of expertise, and to generalists when we desire an overview. Generalists have a firm grasp of the big picture, and they better understand how seemingly distinct concepts fit together and what they all mean as a whole. This combination of generalist and expert is essential, for our species needs both types of people in order for it to prosper and evolve.
During my life, I have played the role of generalist, synthesizing knowledge from many philosophies, political movements, and scientific disciplines. You will see how my roles in life have evolved along with my consciousness. As a child, I wanted to become a priest so I could save individual souls, and in college I became politically active so I could help save humanity. Today, my purpose in life has grown to include helping to save Earth. Whenever possible, I have striven to pass on my often controversial political and philosophical viewpoints to those with whom I have come in contact. Therefore, I implore you to maintain an open mind as you accompany me through a revolutionary journey in thought.
I hope that this book will inspire you to question authority, to critically evaluate the many roads life has to offer, and to dare to live your ideals. In recounting my quest for truth, I will provide an in-depth perspective of the countercultures of which I was privileged to be a part since 1959 up to today. My role as author is not to preach a prepackaged dogma; rather as a tour guide presenting a map of potential paths—ones that you may wish to explore as you seek your own personal reality.
It is my wish to pass my book on to the latest generation of youth who are beginning their journey through life. My ultimate goal is to help people become more aware of the roads they are traveling, just as the radical books I began reading in college made me reevaluate the paths my life was following. In hindsight, I realize that throughout the many roads I have traveled, a consistent theme has been expanding my own consciousness, and ultimately expanding the awareness of those around me as well. Hence, this work is my contribution to the collective knowledge-base of our species.
