The Institute's Canyon and Water Holes

Kathleen catching her breath near the beginning of the canyon. She and the author are carrying firewood in backpacks and boxes so that they can have the luxury of a shampoo with hot water.

The author, bathing in the communal "bathtub," midway down the canyon. The brisk cold stream quickly flushes the soapy water downstream. When the author is seated, the water is chest high.

Kathleen, sitting at the edge of the pool at the end of the canyon. The pool, which is fed by three small spring-fed waterfalls, is chest-deep near the falls.

A shallow cave by the pool, photographed from a similar cave on the opposite side. The waterfalls engulf the ladder in early summer. By late summer, when this photo was taken, the rushing falls slow to a light flow.
