Chapter 8 Summary
Turning Inward (1985-1997)
Now in his mid-forties, the author turns inward as a lifetime of political activism changes course. Volunteering for progressive KPFA radio, he is fortuitously exposed to a research report on extreme low frequency (ELF) radiation experiments. His discovering of this report coincides with US government accusations that the USSR is using "mind-control" transmissions on US embassy staff in Moscow. Meanwhile, environmentalists stage protests to publicize the potential dangers of living near a powerful US Navy ELF transmitter under construction in Wisconsin. The author reviews the scientific literature and discovers that the US itself is experimenting with mind-influencing ELF weapons. Wanting to do research and earn a Ph.D., he contacts top US scientists in the field, and is told that his doctoral proposal is good but that all pertinent research has been classified "top secret." Single-handedly, he constructs an ELF generator and tests 22 subjects, validating the alleged effects of ELF stimulation. The potential consequences of excessive ELF exposure are discussed.
The author falls in love with the woman of his dreams, Emily, and they are soon engaged. During this time he moves his seriously ill mother into his home. In three years, tragedy strikes. His mother dies, and a year later, Emily (now his wife) is diagnosed with terminal cancer. The next year is an emotional roller-coaster during which the author gains spiritual insight while supporting his wife as she selectively combines Western medicine and Eastern spirituality to confront her illness.
Rather than attempting to stop the inevitable, Emily gains inner strength from her enlightened acceptance of death. She accomplishes her final wish when she reunites with her family and friends in Nicaragua and El Salvador and bids them a tearful goodbye. The author gets an inside look at how civil wars have disrupted the lives of so many Central American people. The trip shows the poverty, injustice, and social dynamics that fueled the conflicts he strove to end as an activist. With the help of home hospice, Emily assures that her last days will be with the ones she loves, and that she will die at home in the arms of her husband.
