Chapter 4 Summary

Metamorphosis (1965-1967)

After three years of being politically active every waking moment, the author burns out and moves to Los Angeles, where he becomes a social worker for LA County. Kathleen and he exchange political fervor for hedonism. Joining a flying club, they earn their private pilot licenses, and delight in weekly airborne adventures. They stop flying and begin experimenting with marijuana, LSD, and other drugs, which are not taken to escape reality but rather to expand consciousness. After witnessing the negative aspects of hard drugs and drug-related police corruption, Kathleen and the author stop using everything except marijuana and psychedelics. A near-death experience by the author, coupled with the death of Kathleen’s sister, drive home the emptiness of materialism, and prompt the couple to follow the popular advice proffered during the 1967 Summer of Love: "Turn on, tune in, drop out." Stripping themselves of almost all worldly possessions, they move into a small van and drive to Northern California, where they hope to live their ideals and spawn a more humanistic, less greedy society.
