Chapter 2 Summary

Living My Ideals in Chicago (1962–1964)

Alone in a new city, Sodja escapes from his social isolation by attending a mass protest against the US blockade of Cuba in 1962, where he meets activists from Chicago’s leftist organizations. Seeking a group that shares his philosophical ideals, he joins the Young Socialist Alliance (YSA), and channels his zeal into concrete struggles such as ending school segregation and the Vietnam War. Firsthand experiences provide him with additional examples of media bias and distortion intended to discredit the left. Soon he resigns from an alienating social-work job, becomes a full-time unpaid organizer for the YSA, and organizes a YSA chapter at Roosevelt University. After forming a political commune, he meets a kindred spirit, Kathleen, who becomes his future wife. During his YSA activities, the author witnesses FBI surveillance, infiltration, and sabotage. Years later, he would learn that one of his roommates was an undercover agent. After a successful YSA Midwest speaking tour in 1964, Sodja is asked to move to New York City to establish YSA chapters in Uptown Manhattan and at Columbia University.
